Summary. Apple released iOS 27.0.1 (build 24A446) on 28 September 2026 at 10:00 am Pacific time, which was 10:30 pm in India. It is offered to every iPhone that runs iOS 27, from iPhone 11 onwards. Apple names three fixes: iPhone 18 Pro models restarting after a failed Face ID check, a colour artefact in some 2x photos on a few iPhone 18 Pro units, and a touchscreen that stops responding. Apple lists no CVE entries for it. iPhone 18 Pro owners should install it now, and other iOS 27 users soon.

iOS 27.0.1 at a glance
Apple's developer release feed lists iOS 27.0.1 as build 24A446, published at 10:00 am Pacific on Monday 28 September. Apple's security releases page gives the same date, names iPhone 11 and later as eligible, and lists no published CVE entries for the update. MacRumors and 9to5Mac both reported it available over the air within minutes.

What iOS 27.0.1 fixes, according to Apple
Apple's release notes describe the update as bug fixes for iPhone and name three specific issues. In plain terms:
- Face ID restarts (iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max). A failed Face ID check could make the phone restart unexpectedly.
- Camera colour artefact (a small number of iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max units). Photos taken at 2x with the aperture at f/1.48 could show a colour artefact in certain lighting.
- Unresponsive touchscreen (any iPhone model). Opening Notification Center and Control Center at the same time could leave the touchscreen unresponsive.
9to5Mac points out that only the third fix applies to every iPhone model, and Macworld describes it as a global iOS 27 bug. Brandon Butch showed it on iOS 27.0 in his release-day video: apps still opened, but the Home Screen would not scroll.
The camera bug is narrow. Apple limits it to a small number of devices and to one combination: 2x, f/1.48 and certain lighting. Brandon Butch said he had tested that exact set-up and never saw the artefact, which fits Apple's description.
If you have seen f/1.4, or a freeze on unlock, in other write-ups, Apple's own notes say f/1.48 and an unexpected restart after a failed Face ID check.
Why iPhone 18 Pro models restarted when Face ID failed
The iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max began reaching customers on Friday 18 September. On 21 September MacRumors, citing a Reddit post spotted by 9to5Mac, reported that Face ID could fail during specific actions such as opening a locked app, after which some phones froze and then rebooted to the Lock Screen. Not every owner was affected. Macworld added reports of Face ID failing when unlocking and when paying with Apple Pay, followed by forced restarts. On 24 September MacRumors reported that Apple was testing iOS 27.0.1 and had said a Face ID fix was included.
On the iPhone 18 Pro models, Apple moved Face ID's infrared camera under the top-left corner of the display to shrink the Dynamic Island. MacRumors said it was unclear whether that hardware change was behind the problems, and Macworld wrote that Apple appeared confident it could fix most of them in software. iOS 27.0.1 is that software fix.
The detail that matters is that Apple ties the restart to a failed Face ID check, not only to unlocking. That covers locked apps and Apple Pay, and by our reading any app that asks for Face ID, such as a banking or UPI app. Brandon Butch noted that the bug also affected Apple Pay and other Face ID prompts, not just the Lock Screen. If your iPhone 18 Pro still restarts after a failed Face ID check on 27.0.1, report it to Apple Support, because the software fix should have stopped it.
What iOS 27.0.1 does not list
Apple's notes are short, and 9to5Mac notes that they are usually not a complete list of changes, so older iPhones may get unlisted fixes too. Still, none of these appear in Apple's notes:
- Other Face ID reports. MacRumors forum members reported a message during set-up saying Face ID was not available, and the Require Attention for Face ID setting not always being respected. Apple's 27.0.1 notes mention neither.
- Battery life. Nothing in the notes addresses battery drain. After updating, an iPhone may show that it is optimising Search and Siri for a while, so give it a few days before judging battery life (see the testers' notes below).
- Siri AI access. Apple describes the new Siri as still rolling out to users, and the 27.0.1 notes say nothing about it. Our explainer on how the Siri AI waitlist works covers access.
- New features. It is a bug-fix release, and Apple describes no new features in it.
Not listed does not mean not fixed. But if one of these problems affects you, 27.0.1 is not a promised cure.
Is iOS 27.0.1 a security update?
No. Apple's security releases page lists iOS 27.0.1 and iPadOS 27.0.1 with no published CVE entries, and says the same of macOS Golden Gate 27.0.1, watchOS 27.0.1 and visionOS 27.0.1.
The security fix Apple shipped that day went to the older software lines. iOS 26.7.1 and iPadOS 26.7.1, macOS Tahoe 26.7.1 and macOS Sequoia 15.8.1 each patch one flaw, CVE-2026-86950. It is an out-of-bounds write in CoreGraphics: processing a maliciously crafted file could lead to arbitrary code execution. Apple credits Meta Product Security with the report.
Apple says it is aware of a report that the flaw "may have been exploited" in a highly sophisticated attack on specific, targeted people, and that those people were running versions older than iOS 27. Some coverage described it as a flaw used in targeted attacks, but Apple's own wording is more cautious. Apple does not list CVE-2026-86950 in its security notes for iOS 27.0 or iOS 27.0.1.
What that means in practice:
- On iOS 27.0 or 27.0.1: Apple lists no fix for this flaw in iOS 27, and says the reported attack targeted older versions. Install 27.0.1 for the bug fixes, not for security.
- On iOS 26: install iOS 26.7.1 now, whatever you decide about iOS 27.

Apple's feed timestamps the iPhone, iPad, Mac and Vision Pro 27.0.1 releases, iPadOS 26.7.1 and Xcode 27.2 beta 2 at 10:00 am Pacific, and watchOS 27.0.1 at 1:00 pm. A few notes on the other platforms:

What early testers reported
Apple publishes no download sizes, benchmarks or battery figures for point releases. Two YouTube reviewers who installed iOS 27.0.1 on release day shared measurements: Aaron Zollo of zollotech and Brandon Butch. Each result below is one person's reading on their own phone. None of it is a controlled test, and none of it comes from Apple.

Three of those need context:
- Benchmarks. zollotech called the single-core result the highest he had seen on that phone, with multi-core a little below his best. One run, taken while the phone was still indexing, is not evidence that 27.0.1 changes performance either way.
- Battery. The screen-time figures in the same video (2 hours 4 minutes active, 1 hour 19 minutes idle, 35% used) were from the day before 27.0.1 came out, so they describe iOS 27.0.
- Indexing. After the update, zollotech's phone showed that it was optimising Search and Siri. His advice is to leave the phone on charge overnight and give it a few days, possibly more than a week, before judging battery life.

iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max owners
Install it now. Any failed Face ID check could trigger the restart, and fixing it is the reason this update exists. Back up first, as Apple recommends before any update.
Other iPhones on iOS 27
Install it when convenient. You get the touchscreen fix and whatever unlisted fixes Apple included. Apple lists no CVE entries, so there is no security reason to rush.
iPhones still on iOS 26
iOS 26.7.1 is the update to install now: it keeps you on iOS 26 and adds the CoreGraphics fix. Moving to iOS 27 is a separate decision, covered in the features guide linked above. Apple's security releases page notes that once an iOS update is installed, it cannot be downgraded to the previous version, so moving to iOS 27 is one-way.
iOS 27.0.1 for IT teams
Nothing in the security content forces an emergency push, because 27.0.1 has no published CVE entries. The iPhone 18 Pro fixes still matter if you have issued those models: by our reading, a failed Face ID check could restart the phone mid-task, including in apps that use Face ID for sign-in.
- Rings. Put iPhone 18 Pro users first, the rest of the iOS 27 fleet on a short ring, and devices you are holding on iOS 26 on iOS 26.7.1 straight away. Of the iPhone updates released on 28 September, only iOS 26.7.1 carries a security fix.
- Mechanism. Apple's enterprise notes say legacy MDM software update commands, queries, recommended cadence settings and restrictions such as deferrals no longer work on any 27.0 operating system. On iOS 27 devices, approving, deferring or enforcing 27.0.1 goes through declarative device management. Our DDM migration guide covers the switch.
- No way back. Updates cannot be downgraded once installed, so test on a pilot group before a wide push.

What iOS 27.0.1 means for app developers
- No new SDK for 27.0.1. The only Xcode release that day was Xcode 27.2 beta 2 (27B5028f), and Xcode 27 (27A266a) remains the current release version.
- Re-test biometric paths. On an iPhone 18 Pro running 27.0.1, test failed Face ID, retry and passcode fallback. If your analytics showed abandoned sessions on Face ID screens from iPhone 18 Pro users between 18 and 28 September, the OS restart is a likely cause. That is our inference, not an Apple statement.
- Camera apps. If iPhone 18 Pro users reported colour problems in 2x shots, ask them to update before you start debugging.
- iPhone Duo. It will run iOS 27.1 when it becomes available on 23 October. Xcode 27.1 adds development support for it, with updated SDKs and a simulator for its new poses and orientations. After iOS 27.0.1: iOS 27.1, iOS 27.2 and iPhone Duo
iOS 27.1 is, so far, an iPhone Duo release. Apple says Duo will run iOS 27.1 when it becomes available on 23 October, with features built for the foldable design. Apple's announcements tie iOS 27.1 to no other iPhone, and there is no iOS 27.1 beta you can install on a phone. Developers get the updated SDKs through the Xcode 27.1 beta.
iOS 27.2 is what everyone else is testing. Beta 1 arrived on 16 September and beta 2 (24B5089g) on 21 September. When we checked Apple's release list on 29 September, beta 3 had not appeared. Apple has not given a release date. Reviewers expect iOS 27.2 in the second half of October, but that is their guess.
iPhone Duo pre-orders open on 16 October at 5:00 am Pacific (5:30 pm IST), with availability from 23 October, in more than 70 countries and regions, including India.
If you are on the iOS 27.2 beta
You will not be offered iOS 27.0.1. zollotech said as much in his video, and Apple's build numbers suggest why: 27.2 beta builds start with 24B, while 27.0.1 is 24A446, so your iPhone already runs a later build. You have two options, based on Apple's beta guidance:
- Stay on the beta. Turn off Beta Updates (Settings > General > Software Update > Beta Updates > Off) so no further betas install. The phone then waits for a newer public release, which in practice means iOS 27.2 itself.
- Go back to the public release now. Apple says this means erasing the iPhone and restoring it from a Mac or PC in recovery mode, which installs the current non-beta iOS. Backups made on the beta may not restore to an earlier version, so you need an archived backup from before you installed the beta.
iOS 27.0.1 in India
The update went out worldwide at 10:30 pm IST on Monday 28 September, so Indian users saw it late that night or the next morning.
For iPhone 18 Pro owners in India, the restart bug reached anything behind Face ID. By our inference that includes banking and UPI apps that use Face ID to approve sign-ins or payments. We found no reports naming specific Indian apps.
iPhone Duo pre-orders in India open on 16 October at 5:30 pm IST, with availability from 23 October on iOS 27.1. The 27.0.1 notes list no change to which Apple Intelligence features work here. Our guide to Apple Intelligence in India covers what is available.
How to install iOS 27.0.1
Apple's steps for a wireless update:
- Back up your iPhone to iCloud or a computer.
- Plug the iPhone into power and connect to Wi-Fi.
- Open Settings, tap General, then tap Software Update.
- Tap Download and Install, then follow the onscreen instructions.
Apple adds three points worth knowing:
- If the update does not appear: VPN or proxy connections can stop the iPhone reaching Apple's update servers, and you can update from a Mac or PC instead.
- If space is short: Software Update can remove apps temporarily and reinstall them automatically after the update.
- Automatic updates: with Automatically Install turned on, the iPhone installs updates overnight while it charges on Wi-Fi.
