Summary. iOS 27 is Apple's new iPhone software, and the headline iOS 27 features are Siri AI, AI photo editing, new child safety controls and speed gains Apple claims across the system. Apple released it on 14 September 2026 as build 24A437. It runs on iPhone 11 and later and iPhone SE (2nd generation and later), but Siri AI needs iPhone 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max or an iPhone 16 or later, and starts as an English-only beta.
iOS 27 is out: status, build and update path
Apple's security releases page now names iOS 27 as the current version of iOS. If you followed the betas, our iOS 27 release timeline covers the path from WWDC to launch.
Updating is optional for now: Apple shipped iOS 26.7 the same day, and its security releases page lists both. MacRumors reports that Software Update shows iOS 26.7 as the default, with iOS 27 listed as an option at the bottom. Choose deliberately, because Apple states that an installed iOS update cannot be downgraded.
Two more status points matter:
- Siri AI is a beta with a waitlist. Turning it on adds you to a queue, and Apple says wait times vary.
- iPhone Duo is on a different track. Apple's foldable ships with iOS 27.1 when it goes on sale on 23 October, with pre-orders from 16 October. Apple has not dated iOS 27.1 itself.
Siri AI on iPhone
What Siri AI does
Apple describes Siri AI as a conversational assistant powered by Apple Intelligence. Its India iOS 27 page lists four abilities: back-and-forth conversation, answers from personal context such as an old photo or a buried email, actions inside apps like Messages, Music and Reminders, and world knowledge that can reference information online. Apple says the Apple Foundation Models behind these features were built in collaboration with Google and its Gemini models.
Three additions change daily use:
- The Siri app. A dedicated app collects your conversations, lets you pin them, and lets you start a question on iPhone and continue it on iPad.
- Siri mode in Camera. Siri's multimodal features now sit inside the Camera app as a new mode, so you can search, ask questions and act on what is in front of you. Apple's availability page lists it as iPhone only and English only.
- Write with Siri. Siri AI can draft text from scratch or give feedback on your writing, and in Messages and Mail it can match your writing style, punctuation and tone.
Beta, English and the waitlist
Siri AI began rolling out as a beta in English on 14 September, and Apple says French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish follow in October. No Indian language is on that list.
Apple's support page sets three conditions: a supported device, device and Siri language set to the same supported language, and an Apple Account in an eligible region. After updating, open Settings, tap Siri, then tap Try Siri AI (Beta). That joins the waitlist, and Siri AI downloads automatically when your turn comes. Once it is on, Apple says it keeps working when you travel to other regions.
Usage limits and a future fee
Apple Intelligence features that run on server-side models have daily usage limits. Apple names Siri AI, the intelligent photo editing tools, Image Playground and AFM 3 Cloud models in Shortcuts, and says limits vary by feature, request complexity, system demand and other factors. It adds that expanded access "will be available for a fee in the future".
Apple has published neither the daily limits nor a price, date or plan, so check Apple's current wording before you budget.
Where Siri AI is not available
- European Union. Siri AI, and features that rely on it, are not available in the EU on iOS, iPadOS or watchOS. Apple's iOS 27 page calls this an initial gap, while its availability page gives no such qualifier. Other new Apple Intelligence features, including advanced photo editing, Image Playground and the Safari tools, are available to EU users on iOS 27.
- Mainland China. Siri AI does not work if your Apple Account region is mainland China.
- Children under 13. Apple says Siri AI is not available to users under 13.
Which iPhones get which Siri features
Apple's documentation splits supported iPhones into three groups:
- Siri AI and Apple Intelligence need iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max or any iPhone 16 model or later. Apple's Siri AI support page also names iPhone Air.
- Expressive voices and more advanced Dictation need Apple's most powerful on-device model. On iPhone that means iPhone 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max, Air, 18 Pro, 18 Pro Max and iPhone Duo. iPhone 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max, every iPhone 16 model, iPhone 17 and iPhone 17e miss out.
- The rest of iOS 27 runs on every other supported iPhone, without Apple Intelligence.
Plan for storage: Apple says the new Apple Intelligence needs up to 14 GB on iPhone 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max and Air, and up to 8 GB on other supported iPhones. It turns on automatically on eligible devices after updating. That support page does not name iPhone 18 Pro, 18 Pro Max or iPhone Duo, even though they also run the most powerful on-device model, so Apple has not said which figure applies to them.
Apple Intelligence inside apps
These features live inside apps rather than Siri, and most support more languages than Siri AI.
- Photo editing. Spatial Reframing reframes a photo after it was taken, Extend expands the shot, and an enhanced Clean Up removes larger objects, with usage limits. Clean Up has no language restriction and is available worldwide except mainland China.
- Image Playground. Creates and modifies images in many styles, including photorealistic, also with usage limits.
- Suggestions. Mail offers quick actions based on the conversation, such as adding a calendar event. Suggestions in Messages conversations arrive in a future software update.
- Call Context. Surfaces relevant information from your apps when you call a business, such as a confirmation code from Mail when you ring an airline.
- Safari. Tabs can be grouped into topics automatically, and Notify Me watches a page for changes such as a price change or restock.
- Describe a shortcut. Build a Shortcuts automation by describing it in plain language, with usage limits.
- Passwords. The Passwords app will update weak or compromised passwords for you, but Apple labels this as coming in a future software update.
Apple has given no version or date for the delayed Messages and Passwords features.
Design and performance
Liquid Glass gets more uniform refraction and better contrast, app icons are sharper, and a new slider sets the look anywhere from ultra clear to fully tinted.
Apple's speed claims come with specific test conditions:
| Apple's claim | Apple's test conditions |
|---|---|
| App launches up to 30% faster | iPhone 11 Pro Max, iOS 26.6 vs pre-release iOS 27, August 2026, measured after many cycles of use |
| New photos load up to 70% faster in Photos | iPhone 15, iOS 26.6 vs pre-release iOS 27, July 2026, 50,000-asset library |
| AirDrop transfers up to 80% faster | iPhone 16 Plus, iOS 26.6 vs pre-release iOS 27, July 2026, 30MB of photos with no Wi-Fi network joined |
Apple notes that results vary with configuration, content and usage, and these remain its own lab figures rather than guarantees.
Apple also lists smoother switching between Wi-Fi and cellular networks and more relevant ranking in Mail search.
Child safety
Parents get more control in iOS 27:
- In Setup Assistant, parents choose which system apps a child can use, and can add more later through Ask to Buy.
- Ask to Browse makes children request permission for new websites. It works in Safari and other WebKit browsers after Screen Time is upgraded, and parents can review requests in Messages.
- Parental approval of new contacts over Messages works on iPhone, iPad and Mac.
- Communication Safety now also intervenes before children see gore or violence in shared images and videos, as well as nudity.
- Time Allowances, Schedules and redesigned parental controls in Settings complete the set.
More detail is in our iOS 27 child safety explainer.
Other iOS 27 features worth knowing
- Health. Cycle Tracking adds cycle deviation notifications that cover perimenopause, for users aged 40 and above.
- Home. Apple Intelligence groups related activity notifications, describes HomeKit Secure Video clips and searches footage by what happened. These need a home hub, and the video features also need the home owner to have an Apple Intelligence iPhone and an eligible iCloud+ plan. Apple's developer release notes put that plan at 2TB or above. Supported HomeKit Secure Video cameras can now stream and record in 4K with iCloud+.
- GymKit on iPhone. Connect to compatible treadmills, ellipticals, bikes and stair-steppers for real-time metrics, and track heart rate with AirPods Pro 3.
- AirPods Custom EQ. Adjust lows, mids and highs in AirPods settings.
- Maps. Flyover combines aerial imagery with Visual Intelligence models for sharper detail.
- iCloud Shared Albums. Friends on Android or Windows can join and contribute through iCloud.com, and albums support full-resolution sharing. The feature is available worldwide except mainland China.
- Accessibility. VoiceOver adds richer image descriptions and Action button integration, and Magnifier adds tools for low vision.
iOS 27 compatible iPhones and what each gets
Apple's iOS 27 page lists every compatible iPhone, and its footnotes set which models get Apple Intelligence and which get the extra on-device features:
| Tier | iPhone models | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| iOS 27 without Apple Intelligence | iPhone 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro Max, 12 mini, 12, 12 Pro, 12 Pro Max, 13 mini, 13, 13 Pro, 13 Pro Max, 14, 14 Plus, 14 Pro, 14 Pro Max, 15, 15 Plus, SE (2nd and 3rd generation) | Liquid Glass updates, performance work, child safety, Health, Shared Albums and other non-AI features |
| Apple Intelligence and Siri AI | iPhone 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max, 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro, 16 Pro Max, 16e, 17, 17e | The above plus the Siri AI beta, Siri app, AI photo editing, Image Playground, Suggestions, Call Context and Safari tools |
| Apple Intelligence plus Apple's most powerful on-device model | iPhone 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max, Air, 18 Pro, 18 Pro Max, iPhone Duo (with iOS 27.1) | Everything above plus expressive Siri voices and more advanced Dictation |
No iPhone lost support: every iPhone on Apple's iOS 26.5 compatibility list, from iPhone 11 to iPhone 17e, is also on the iOS 27 list. The additions are iPhone 18 Pro, 18 Pro Max and iPhone Duo. Apple's iOS 27 page lists iPhone Duo, but its iOS 27 support guide does not yet. Apple has not said why.
What developers should do
- Set up Xcode 27. The iOS 27 SDK comes bundled with Xcode 27, which includes Swift 6.4, needs macOS Tahoe 26.6 or later and installs only on Apple silicon Macs. Teams still on Intel Macs need new hardware to build with it, as our macOS 27 Golden Gate guide explains. Our Xcode 27 and Swift 6.4 guide covers the toolchain changes.
- Adopt the scene-based life cycle. Apps built with the iOS 27 SDK must use the UIKit scene-based life cycle or they fail to launch. Our UIScene migration guide walks through the work.
- Add a launch screen. iOS apps built with the 27.0 SDK must include one, or the App Store rejects them.
- Plan for Liquid Glass. The UIDesignRequiresCompatibility opt-out key is ignored when you build for iOS 27 or later, so apps can no longer keep the previous design. See our Liquid Glass and Xcode 27 migration guide.
- Fix deprecations and compile breaks. canOpenURL: is deprecated, the new @State implementation stops some existing code from compiling, and entities using the photos.asset App Intents schema may not compile because the schema gained new properties.
- Connect to Siri AI through App Intents. Apple positions App Intents schemas as the way apps expose content and actions to Apple Intelligence and Siri AI. The release notes add that Siri can load content through an app's drag interactions.
- Mark the deadline. From April 2027, iOS and iPadOS apps uploaded to App Store Connect must be built with the iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 SDK or later.
What IT teams should do
Apple's enterprise summary highlights AppleCare log collection, privacy consent for apps and websites, and Return to Service enhancements. These changes need action first:
- Move software update management to declarative device management. Legacy MDM software update commands, queries, recommended cadence settings and restrictions such as deferrals no longer work on any 27.0 operating system. If your MDM still relies on them, you lose update control on devices that reach iOS 27.
- Decide on Siri AI. Device management can restrict Siri AI, Visual Intelligence and natural-language calendar event editing. Apple's enterprise page does not mention supervision, but Apple's device management documentation allows the declarative Siri settings, which hold the Siri AI switch, only in supervised enrolment. Check which devices are supervised and test these restrictions before relying on them.
- Check server TLS. In the 27.0 releases, system processes for MDM, declarative management, automated device enrolment, profile installation, app installation and software updates enforce stricter TLS. Servers need TLS 1.2 or later with ATS-compliant cipher suites and certificates, or connections may fail.
- Update setup flows. Device management can skip the new Liquid Glass pane in Setup Assistant, and legacy MDM profiles can now be delivered as declarative assets.
- Hold where needed. iOS 26.7 gives devices you are not ready to move a same-day security release, and iOS 27 cannot be rolled back.
For a phased plan, see our iOS 27 enterprise rollout guide.
What India users get and do not get yet
Apple's Siri AI support page names only the EU and mainland China as places where Siri AI does not work, and India is not named. The same page asks for an Apple Account in an eligible region but does not list those regions. What you get depends mostly on language settings.
- Siri AI and Siri mode in Camera. Apple's availability page lists these as available in English without naming variants. The Camera feature needs a supported English variant, and Apple does not say whether English (India) counts. If Try Siri AI (Beta) does not appear, first check that device language and Siri language match.
- Confirmed for English (India). Mail and Messages Suggestions list English (India) among nine English variants. So do Writing Tools, Image Playground, Type to Siri, Call Context, Spatial Reframing, Extend, the Safari tools, Describe a shortcut and the Home features.
- Not listed for English (India). Expressive Siri voices are listed only for English (United Kingdom) and English (United States), although the India iOS 27 page promotes the feature with only a hardware footnote.
- No Indian languages yet. The October expansion covers French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish, and Apple has named no timeline for Hindi or other Indian languages.
- iPhone Duo in the first wave. India is among the launch countries, with pre-orders from 16 October and availability from 23 October, on iOS 27.1.
- The same limits. Apple's India iOS 27 page carries the same daily usage limits and future-fee wording.
Is iOS 27 worth updating to now?
- iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 16 or later, personal use. Update if you want Siri AI. Expect a beta, an English-only start, a waitlist, daily limits and up to 8 GB or 14 GB of storage for Apple Intelligence.
- iPhone 11 to iPhone 15 Plus, and iPhone SE. You get the design refresh, child safety tools and Apple's claimed speed gains, two of which Apple measured on an iPhone 11 Pro Max and an iPhone 15. There is no Siri AI, so there is less reason to rush.
- Work phones and managed fleets. Wait until IT confirms that update management, server TLS and key apps work on iOS 27. iOS 26.7 brings security fixes in the meantime.
- Families. The new parental controls are a good reason to update, but Ask to Browse only works once Screen Time has been upgraded.
Whichever group you are in, updates cannot be downgraded, and Apple has not said how long iOS 26 security updates will continue.
