Summary. The headline iPadOS 27 features are Siri AI, next-generation Apple Intelligence and faster work with files and windows. Apple released the update on 14 September 2026 as iPadOS 27.0, build 24A437. It runs on 23 iPad models, from the iPad (9th generation) and iPad mini (6th generation) up to the M5 iPad Pro, but Siri AI needs an iPad with M1 or later or the iPad mini (A17 Pro).
iPadOS 27 is out: build, update path and no way back
Apple's security releases page lists iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 as released on 14 September 2026 and names 27 as the latest version of iOS and iPadOS. The Apple Developer releases page lists the final build as iPadOS 27.0 (24A437), the same build number as iOS 27.0.
Apple's support article on updating an iPhone or iPad says to back up first and connect to power and Wi-Fi, then open Settings > General > Software Update and tap Download and Install.
Before you update, note two things:
- Apple says that once an iPadOS software update is installed, it cannot be downgraded to the previous version.
- Apple released iPadOS 26.7 on the same day for iPads staying on iPadOS 26, including the models iPadOS 27 no longer supports.

Siri AI on iPad
Apple describes Siri AI as a conversational assistant for open-ended questions and brainstorming that can use personal context, take actions in apps such as Messages, Music and Reminders, and look up information online.
What is different on iPad
- A Siri app. A dedicated app brings your conversations together across your Apple devices, and you can pin conversations.
- Siri in Spotlight. Apple's iPadOS 27 release notes say you can ask Siri questions through Spotlight by swiping down from the top edge of the display.
- Visual Intelligence with a finger or Apple Pencil. On iPad, Visual Intelligence starts from the screenshot gesture; Siri mode in the Camera app is iPhone only. You then tap an item with your finger or circle it with Apple Pencil to ask Siri about it. Apple's footnote limits the feature to devices with the language set to a supported English variant.
- Write with Siri. Siri AI can draft text from a description or give feedback on what you have written, anywhere you type. In Messages and Mail, Apple says it can match your writing style, punctuation and tone.
- Expressive Voices. You can pick a Siri voice and adjust its expressivity and pace, but only on iPads with M4 or later and at least 12GB of unified memory. Apple's iPadOS 27 release notes give more accurate on-device dictation the same requirement.
Beta, English first and a waitlist
Siri AI ships as a beta. Apple's footnote says it requires an Apple Intelligence-enabled device set to a supported language and is available in English to start. Apple says French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish follow in October.
Apple's support page describes how to join:
- After updating, open Settings, tap Siri, then tap Try Siri AI (Beta).
- This adds you to a waitlist with variable wait times, and Siri AI downloads automatically when your wait is over.
Three restrictions matter for families and organisations:
- Siri AI is not available to users under 13.
- Siri AI is not available on iPadOS in the EU. Apple's support page states this without qualification, while its newsroom post says Siri AI will not be available there initially.
- Siri AI does not work with a mainland China Apple Account region, and Apple's Feature Availability page lists it as not available in China mainland.
Usage limits and a future fee
Apple applies daily usage limits to Apple Intelligence features that rely on server-side models, naming Siri AI, the intelligent photo editing tools, Image Playground and AFM 3 Cloud models in Shortcuts. Limits may vary by feature, request complexity and system demand, and Apple says expanded access will be available for a fee in the future. Apple has not published the fee or a start date.
Which iPads get which features
Apple states the Apple Intelligence rule by chip (iPad mini with A17 Pro, or M1 and later), so the third column applies it to Apple's list of 23 compatible models.

The Expressive Voices column depends on memory. Apple's spec sheet for the 11-inch iPad Pro (M4) lists 8GB on 256GB and 512GB models and 16GB on 1TB and 2TB models. Apple's separate spec sheet for the 13-inch iPad Pro (M4) shows the same split. The M5 iPad Pro, in both sizes, has 12GB or 16GB of unified memory. Apple's spec sheet for the 11-inch iPad Air (M4) lists 12GB in every capacity, and its 13-inch iPad Air (M4) spec sheet also lists 12GB. MacRumors' roundup ties custom Siri voices to 1TB storage, but Apple's requirement is memory.
Storage is the practical cost. Apple says Apple Intelligence needs up to 14GB of storage on iPads with M4 and later and at least 12GB of unified memory, and up to 8GB on other Apple Intelligence-enabled models.
iPads that lost support
Five iPads that run iPadOS 26 are not on the iPadOS 27 list: iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd generation), iPad Pro 11-inch (1st generation), iPad Air (3rd generation), iPad (8th generation) and iPad mini (5th generation). Apple's security releases page covers all five for iPadOS 26.7 but none of them for iPadOS 27. 9to5Mac noted that the cut-off removes every iPad with an A12 or A12X chip.
Apple Intelligence in iPad apps
Apple lists these next-generation Apple Intelligence features for iPad apps:
- Siri in Notes. Get answers or next steps from typed or handwritten notes, such as turning handwritten lecture notes into a study guide.
- Photo editing. Spatial Reframing reframes a photo after it has been taken, alongside Extend and an enhanced Clean Up. Usage limits may apply.
- Safari. Tabs can be grouped into topics automatically, and Notify Me watches a page for changes such as a price change or restock.
- Image Playground. It now creates images in almost any style, including photorealistic, subject to usage limits.
- Suggestions in Messages and Mail. Apple labels this feature as available in English, and Suggestions in Messages conversations arrive in a future software update.
- Describe a shortcut. Shortcuts builds an automation from a plain description, and usage limits may apply. Apple's own example turns on Windowed Apps and tiles Safari and Notes side by side when a keyboard connects.
Calendar also gains Describe an event, where you type an event in natural language and Apple Intelligence fills in the time, location, invitees and title.
Another feature is not here yet. Fix passwords with a tap, where the Passwords app updates weak or compromised passwords for you, carries the label "Coming in a future software update". Apple gives no date.
Windows, Files and performance
The multitasking changes Apple lists for iPadOS 27 are refinements:
- Apple says closing, switching and dragging windows while multitasking has improved.
- App names appear in the status bar, and iPhone apps running on iPad can now be resized.
Apple's up-to-5x Files claim and its test
Apple says browsing and transferring files from iPad to an external drive is up to 5x faster. The India page footnote describes the test: Apple ran it in July 2026 on an iPad Pro 11-inch (M4), comparing iPadOS 26.4.2 with pre-release iPadOS 27, using an APFS-formatted USB 4 external SSD and the Files app copying and browsing 10,000 JPG files. The same footnote says performance varies with configuration, content and other factors.
Apple also says apps launch up to 30 percent faster on iPhone and iPad, recently captured photos load up to 70 percent faster and AirDrop transfers are up to 80 percent faster. The footnotes for those three figures cite iPhone testing only.
Other system changes on Apple's page:
- iPad chooses between Wi-Fi and cellular connections more smoothly, and the CPU scheduler is optimised.
- Missed-message notifications and unread counts sync more quickly when you return to the iPad.
- Mail search uses a new ranking system to put the most relevant results first.
Liquid Glass refinements
Apple says Liquid Glass gets improved contrast and sharper app icons, and a new slider changes the look from ultra clear to fully tinted. See our Liquid Glass and Xcode 27 migration guide.
Child safety on iPad
Apple's child safety changes on iPad, briefly:
- In Setup Assistant, parents choose exactly which system apps a child can use, with Ask to Buy for requests.
- Ask to Browse makes children request permission for new websites. It works in Safari and other WebKit browsers after upgrading Screen Time.
- Communication Safety now also intervenes before children see gore or violence in shared images and videos.

Other iPadOS 27 features
Apple's page also lists:
- Photos slideshows with slide duration, transition and music settings, which can be saved as a video.
- iCloud Shared Albums that are easier for Android and Windows users to join on iCloud.com, with full-resolution sharing.
- Enhanced Flyover in Maps and Custom EQ for AirPods.
- VoiceOver with richer image descriptions, and Magnifier tools for low vision.
- A smarter Home app that groups activity notifications, describes and searches HomeKit Secure Video clips, and lets supported cameras stream and record in 4K. Notification grouping needs a home hub and an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone or iPad. Clip descriptions and search need the home owner to have an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone and an eligible iCloud+ plan, and 4K needs iCloud+ and a compatible camera.
What developers should do
Apple's release notes list these changes for apps built with the iOS and iPadOS 27 SDK:
- Adopt the scene-based life cycle. Without the UIKit scene-based life cycle, apps fail to launch. Our UIScene migration guide covers the work.
- Ship a launch screen. Declare one through UILaunchStoryboardName, UILaunchStoryboards, UILaunchScreen or UILaunchScreens in Info.plist.
- Check apps that set UIRequiresFullScreen. On iPad, an app built with the iOS 27 SDK that sets the key should receive each window resize as a discrete change to a new UIScreen with updated bounds.
- Test iPhone-only apps on iPad. After the first resize, an iPhone-only app's scene should ignore supported interface orientations. For iPad apps, supported orientations are no longer a condition for continuous resizing.
- Check your menus. The iPadOS 27 menu bar and context menus hide menu element images by default. UIKit adds preferredImageVisibility on UIMenuElement, and in SwiftUI the .titleAndIcon label style forces icons to show.
- Review drag interactions. When Apple Intelligence is invoked from a context menu, Siri can load content through your app's UIDragInteractionDelegate methods, so avoid animation or modal UI in sessionWillBegin.
- Replace canOpenURL. It is deprecated; open the URL and handle any failure instead.
There is also a firm date. From April 2027, iOS and iPadOS apps uploaded to App Store Connect must be built with the iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 SDK or later.
For Apple Pencil apps, the June 2026 PencilKit updates add recognition of handwritten text, search within ink and indexable strings, plus stroke identity and path erasing. What IT teams and schools should do
For managed iPad fleets, the main changes are:
- Move software updates to declarative management. Legacy software update commands, queries, cadence settings and deferral restrictions no longer work in any 27.0 operating system.
- Check server TLS. Servers used for MDM, declarative device management, automated device enrolment, profile and app installation and software updates need TLS 1.2 or later with ATS-compliant cipher suites and certificates.
- Decide on Siri AI and Visual Intelligence. Apple's declarative SiriSettings configuration adds an AllowSiriAI key on iPadOS 27 that turns off Siri AI features. The configuration is allowed only in supervised enrolment and lists Shared iPad. Apple's enterprise notes, written for iOS 27, say device management can also restrict Visual Intelligence and natural language calendar event editing.
- Check setup and Return to Service. The same iOS 27 notes say device management can skip the new Liquid Glass Setup Assistant pane, and a supervised device can be made to install a software update when it receives a Return to Service erase command. Apple's deployment guide confirms the Return to Service change for iPadOS 27, but the notes do not name iPad for the Setup Assistant skip, so test it on an iPad first.
For schools, Siri AI is not available to students under 13, whatever the hardware. Apple's June 2026 deployment guide says a new version of the Classroom app on iPadOS 27 lets teachers lock student iPads to one or more websites with no IT configuration, and that a mode locking student iPads to one or more apps comes later this year. What India users get, and what is not here yet
- Siri AI in English. The India iPadOS 27 page says Siri AI is rolling out in English. The Feature Availability page lists Siri AI as available in English without naming English variants, so Apple has not explicitly listed English (India) for it.
- No Indian languages yet. The October additions are French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish. Business Standard reported that Apple has not announced a timeline for Hindi or other major Indian languages.
- Expressive Voices is not listed for English (India). The Feature Availability page lists only English (United Kingdom) and English (United States).
- Most app features list English (India). Writing Tools, Genmoji, Image Playground, Photos Spatial Reframing and Extend, Safari tab grouping and Notify Me, Describe a shortcut and Calendar Describe an event all include it. Messages and Mail Suggestions list nine English variants, including English (India).
- Live Translations in Phone and FaceTime do not list English (India).
- Apple Pencil handwriting features. Searchable Handwriting, Copy Handwriting as Text, Data Detectors and Scribble are marked Available on iPadOS and include English (India).
Buyers should note that the 256GB and 512GB iPad Pro (M4) has 8GB of memory and cannot use Expressive Voices, while the current iPad Pro on Apple's India specs page has 12GB from the 256GB model up.
Is iPadOS 27 worth updating to now?
- iPad with M1 or later, or iPad mini (A17 Pro). Yes for most people. You get the new Apple Intelligence app features where your language and region are supported, and outside the EU and mainland China you also get Siri AI after the waitlist, including Visual Intelligence with Apple Pencil. Usage limits apply, and two features are still to come.
- iPad (9th and 10th generation, A16), iPad Air (4th generation), iPad mini (6th generation), iPad Pro 11-inch (2nd generation) and 12.9-inch (4th generation). You get iPadOS 27 and its security fixes, but there is no Apple Intelligence or Siri AI.
- The five dropped models. Install iPadOS 26.7.
- Security. iPadOS 27 includes security fixes, but because there is no downgrade, test critical apps first.
- Managed fleets and schools. Update after confirming declarative software update policies, server TLS and your Siri AI restriction settings.
