Summary. iOS 27 has a fixed schedule shape even though Apple has not named the final day. The first developer beta arrived on June 8, 2026, the day Apple unveiled iOS 27 at WWDC26; developer beta 2 followed on June 22. Developer beta 3 is due around July 6, and the free public beta opens through the Apple Beta Software Program a few days later, in mid-July. Apple then runs new builds every 10 to 14 days until a release candidate lands around September 9, close to the rumored iPhone 18 keynote. The free public release is expected on September 14 or 15, 2026, a few days before the iPhone 18 Pro goes on sale on September 18 at prices starting near $999. Every iPhone from the iPhone 11 forward can install iOS 27, but the new Siri AI features need an iPhone 15 Pro, an iPhone 16, or later.
This page is the date-by-date schedule. If you only want the yes-or-no answer to whether the update has shipped, read our companion piece on whether iOS 27 is out yet. Here the focus is the calendar: the beta ladder, the September launch window, and what developers should do before the .0 build reaches customers.
iOS 27 release date, at a glance
iOS 27 is the 2026 version of Apple's iPhone software, the successor to iOS 26. Apple has confirmed only that the finished update ships "this fall" as a free download. It has not committed to a public date, and it usually reveals one at its early-September iPhone event. Based on Apple's pattern of shipping the .0 update the Monday or Tuesday after that event, David Phelan of Forbes and other trackers put the release on September 14 or 15, 2026.
| Stage | Date (2026) | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| WWDC26 unveiling | June 8 | iOS 27 announced, developer beta 1 released |
| Developer beta 2 | June 22 | Second build, about two weeks later |
| Developer beta 3 | Around July 6 | Cadence settles to every 10 to 14 days |
| Public beta 1 | Mid-July, after July 6 | Free testing opens at beta.apple.com |
| Release candidate | Around September 9 | Near-final build for developers and testers |
| Public release | September 14 or 15 (estimated) | Free update for everyone |
Read the September rows as estimates, not promises: only the June dates and the July public-beta month come straight from Apple. Our full iOS 27 launch-date breakdown tracks the same milestones and updates as they firm up.
The full iOS 27 beta timeline
Apple runs the same beta ladder every year. It unveils the software at WWDC in June, ships developer betas through the summer, opens a public beta a few weeks in, then finishes with a release candidate right before the September launch.
For iOS 27, the ladder started on June 8, 2026 with developer beta 1, and beta 2 followed on June 22. From there, Forbes reports the cadence settles to roughly one build every 10 to 14 days, with developer beta 3 expected on or around July 6. The public beta opens a few days after that, which lands it in mid-July; MacObserver's tracking points to the week of July 13 to 17. The public channel always trails the developer channel by about one build, so when developers get beta 4, public testers get beta 3.
New builds then continue through July and August. The final one is the release candidate, the near-final build that Apple ships to both developer and public testers; it replaced the older golden master label years ago. For iOS 27 the release candidate is expected around September 9, 2026, the same day as the rumored iPhone event. Once the release candidate is stable, the public .0 update is only days away.
When is the iOS 27 public release?
The public release is tied to the iPhone 18 launch, because Apple ships the iOS .0 update within days of announcing new phones. That anchors the whole September week.
| Date (2026) | Expected event | Status as of July 1 |
|---|---|---|
| September 9 (Wed) | iPhone 18 keynote and iOS 27 release candidate | Rumored |
| September 11 (Fri) | iPhone 18 pre-orders open | Rumored |
| September 14 or 15 | iOS 27 public release | Estimated |
| September 18 (Fri) | iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max on sale | Rumored |
| Spring 2027 | iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e arrive | Reported |
Reporting from Forbes places the keynote on Wednesday, September 9, chosen to avoid the September 7 Labor Day holiday, with pre-orders on September 11 and the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max on sale September 18. There is a twist this year: MacRumors reports that only the premium models, the two Pro phones and Apple's first foldable iPhone, ship in September 2026, each expected to start at $999 or more, while the standard iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e slip to spring 2027. iOS 27 stays a free update for every supported iPhone regardless of which new hardware you buy.
What developers should do before iOS 27 ships
If you build or maintain an iOS app, the timeline is a work schedule, not just trivia. The betas are your test window before millions of users move to iOS 27 in September.
Developers can already build with the Xcode 27 beta and the iOS 27 SDK and submit those builds for internal and external testing through TestFlight. There is no rush to rebuild everything: Apple's current App Store floor is still the iOS 26 SDK, required for new uploads since April 28, 2026, and that requirement usually rises to the newest SDK only months after launch. The practical plan is to install a mid-cycle developer or public beta on a test device now, confirm your app runs on it, and watch the release candidate in early September as the build customers will actually run.
The headline platform change to test against is Siri. Apple rebuilt the assistant as Siri AI, and its software chief framed the design choice plainly. "We see Siri not as a separate chatbot, an unintegrated place you go and chitchat, but rather as an integral but conversational tool that you use in the moment," said Craig Federighi, Apple's senior vice president of Software Engineering, at WWDC 2026. If your app exposes actions, the new systemwide app intents are worth adopting during the beta window rather than after launch.
Which iPhones can install iOS 27
The compatibility list is wide; the feature list is narrower. iOS 27 runs on iPhone 11 and later plus the iPhone SE from the 2nd generation, which 9to5Mac counted as 31 models. Apple Intelligence and Siri AI need newer silicon.
| iPhone tier | iOS 27? | Siri AI and Apple Intelligence? |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone 11 to iPhone 14 | Yes | No |
| iPhone 15 and 15 Plus | Yes | No |
| iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max | Yes | Yes |
| iPhone 16 and iPhone 17 series | Yes | Yes |
| iPhone SE (2nd and 3rd gen) | Yes | No |
Apple's own availability notes limit Apple Intelligence to iPhone 16 or later plus the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max. So an older phone gets iOS 27 on release day, including the speed gains Apple measured on prerelease builds, up to 30% faster app launches and up to 70% faster photo loading, but not the on-device AI.
What iOS 27 delivers when the timeline completes
The schedule matters because of what arrives at the end of it. When iOS 27 ships, the headline is Siri AI, an entirely new Siri that reads on-screen context, searches across your messages, mail, and photos, and can go to the web for current answers, with a dedicated app that syncs conversations privately through iCloud. Alongside it, Apple's new generation of Apple Intelligence adds Spatial Reframing to recompose a photo after capture, photorealistic output in Image Playground, one-tap suggestions in Messages, and a Notify Me option in Safari that watches a page for restocks or price drops.
The performance work reaches every supported iPhone, not just the newest. On prerelease builds Apple measured app launches up to 30% faster, photos loading up to 70% faster after capture, and AirDrop transfers up to 80% faster, with the tests run in April and May 2026. iOS 27 also adds a Settings slider to tune the Liquid Glass look from clear to tinted, perimenopause and menopause tracking in the Health app, an enhanced Apple Maps Flyover that blends aerial imagery with AI, and a full set of parental controls including per-contact approval and Time Allowances for Entertainment, Games, and Social Media apps. Two markets get less on day one: Apple is delaying Siri AI in the European Union under the Digital Markets Act, and holding the new Apple Intelligence features in China while it works through local rules.
Should you update on day one?
For most people, updating on release day is fine, and the security fixes alone are a good reason. If your iPhone is older or you depend on a specific app for work, waiting a week or two for the first point update, iOS 27.1, is a reasonable hedge against launch-day bugs. Installing a beta before release is a separate decision: the public beta is free and steadier than the developer build, but it is still test software, so keep it off the phone you rely on and back up first.
India-specific considerations
For readers in India, the timing is simple. Apple releases iOS worldwide at the same moment, so iOS 27 reaches India on the same day as the United States; because Apple ships on Pacific time, the update tends to arrive in the evening India time, with no staggered wait. The nuance is language. Apple Intelligence has worked in India since the iOS 18.4 update in March 2025, but only in English (India); Apple's India support pages confirm it is not yet offered in Hindi or other regional languages, though the new Siri understands English mixed with languages such as Hindi and Tamil.
On price, the cheapest way into the AI features in India is the iPhone 16e, which starts at Rs 59,900 for the 128GB model, while an older iPhone 11 still gets iOS 27 itself for free. On privacy, Apple's on-device and private-cloud approach fits the direction of India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023; teams shipping apps for Indian users should still design their own data handling to meet DPDP requirements rather than lean on the platform.
