iOS 27 release date timeline: 6 developer betas in, 4 weeks to go

Summary. iOS 27 is now deep into its beta cycle. Apple shipped the first developer beta on 8 June 2026 as build 24A5355q, and the sixth developer beta landed on 17 August 2026 as build 24A5418b, per Apple's own software releases feed. Public testers are one build behind: MacRumors recorded public beta 3 on 11 August and public beta 4 on 17 August, the latter arriving hours after the sixth developer build. The current shipping release is still iOS 26.6.1, build 23G83, also dated 17 August. What remains is the short end of the calendar: a release candidate expected around 7 September and the general release expected around 14 September 2026, alongside the new iPhone lineup. The developer beta needs a $99-per-year Apple Developer account; the public beta is free at beta.apple.com. iOS 27 runs on the iPhone 11 and later, though the Siri AI features require an iPhone 15 Pro or later.

Where iOS 27 actually is, as of 21 August 2026

The useful question in late August is not "when is the public beta" — it shipped weeks ago — but "how far along is it". Six developer builds in eleven weeks is Apple's normal cadence, and the gap between developer and public builds has closed to hours rather than days, which is what usually happens as a release nears.

Apple shipped iOS 26.6.1 on the same day as beta 6. That pairing matters more than it looks: Apple keeps patching the current release right up to launch, so there is no pressure to move to a beta for security reasons.

The full iOS 27 beta timeline

Every developer build Apple has published for iOS 27, taken from its releases feed rather than reconstructed from news coverage.

The two dates at the bottom are Apple's long-standing pattern rather than announced commitments. Apple confirms the exact release date at its early-September event, usually about a week before the software goes public.

Beta 6 was not an iPhone-only drop. Apple shipped iPadOS 27.0 beta 6 on the same build number, plus macOS 27.0 beta 6 (26A5416b), tvOS 27.0 beta 6 (24J5353b), visionOS 27.0 beta 6 (24M5355a) and watchOS 27.0 beta 6 (24R5353a). If you test across Apple platforms, they move together.

Phase 1: the developer beta

The timeline opened at WWDC. Apple shipped the first developer beta on 8 June 2026, alongside the first Xcode 27 beta, and followed with developer beta 2 on 22 June. This phase is for developers who need the earliest build, and it requires a paid Apple Developer account at $99 per year. Access to the developer beta is not the same as the free public beta that follows; it ships first and is the least stable.

For most people and most businesses, the developer beta was a signal to prepare, not to install. That window has closed. In late August the developer and public builds are hours apart, so the paid account buys very little unless you need Xcode 27 itself.

Phase 2: the public beta

The public beta arrived in mid-July through Apple's Beta Software Program: sign up, then open Settings, General, Software Update, and Beta Updates on a compatible iPhone. It is free.

Four public builds later, the character of this phase has changed. Early betas carried the visible problems — warmer devices, faster battery drain — and those are the builds people wrote about. Public beta 4, shipped 17 August, is a near-final build. It is still a beta, so keep it on a spare device and take an archived backup first, but the risk profile in late August is not the risk profile in July. Phase 3: the release candidate

The release candidate, expected around 7 September, is the near-final build Apple intends to ship unless a last-minute bug forces a change. It typically arrives about a week before the public release, and it usually appears alongside Apple's early-September event, where the company confirms the exact launch date and the new iPhones.

For IT teams, the release candidate is the last checkpoint. If your app validation or MDM testing is not done by the time it lands, that is the signal to accelerate, because the stable release follows within days. With beta 6 already out, teams that have not started testing have roughly two weeks of useful runway, not two months.

Phase 4: the general release

The finished iOS 27 is expected around Monday 14 September 2026. Apple has shipped its major iOS update in the second week of September for years, with the release coming alongside the new iPhone lineup, per Macworld. This is the version built for everyone.

Businesses should not push it fleet-wide on launch day. Use the remaining beta window to validate, then roll out in stages, as our iOS 27 enterprise rollout plan describes. The general release is the finish line for consumers and the starting gun for a staged fleet deployment.

Which iPhones are on the timeline?

Compatibility widened this year. iOS 27 runs on the iPhone 11 and later, keeping the A13 Bionic as the minimum chip, per AppleInsider. The iPhone XS, XS Max, XR, X, 8, 8 Plus, and first-generation SE are no longer supported. The Siri AI and Apple Intelligence features need an iPhone 15 Pro or later, so older supported phones follow the same timeline but get iOS 27 without the AI layer.

That split is the part product teams keep underestimating. An app that gates a headline feature behind Apple Intelligence is shipping it to the iPhone 15 Pro and newer only, while the rest of a supported install base sees the app without it.

What the timeline means if you ship an app

Consumers watch this calendar for a download. Product teams should watch it for two hard dates that sit underneath it.

The first is the SDK. Apple's upcoming requirements page still lists Xcode 26 and the iOS 26 SDK as the App Store submission floor, in force since 28 April 2026, and Apple has not announced a replacement. Nothing forces you onto the iOS 27 SDK in September.

The second is what happens when you do move. Rebuilding against the 27.0 SDK makes the UIScene life cycle mandatory: an unmigrated UIKit app installs and then fails to launch. Xcode 27 also installs only on Apple silicon Macs, so an Intel build server cannot produce an iOS 27 SDK build at all.

Those two facts set a sensible order of work: validate your current build against the betas now, and treat the SDK rebuild as a separate project on its own schedule. How many days until iOS 27?

As of 21 August 2026, the expected release candidate is about seventeen days out and the general release is about twenty-four days out. Six developer betas and four public betas are behind us. The remaining window is short and it is the last one in which testing changes anything, because after the release candidate the software is effectively fixed. Two points matter for readers and teams in India.

Apple ships iOS releases worldwide on the same day, so a 14 September general release reaches India in the same rollout rather than on a separate schedule. The betas work the same way: Apple's Beta Software Program is open to Indian Apple Accounts on the same builds and the same dates listed above.

The Apple Intelligence split is sharper in India than in mature markets, because the installed base skews toward older and mid-range iPhones. A product team building for Indian users should assume most of its audience gets iOS 27 without the Siri AI layer, and design the AI-dependent paths as enhancements rather than the primary flow.
