Summary. Apple previewed iOS 27 at WWDC on June 8, 2026, and the headline for device buyers is a split: the OS itself runs on far more phones than the AI does. All iPhones that support iOS 26 support iOS 27, but Apple Intelligence features require an Apple A17 Pro chip or newer, as found on the iPhone 15 Pro or newer. So an iPhone 11 from 2019 can install iOS 27, yet seven of the most useful new Apple Intelligence features will not appear on it, or on the standard iPhone 15 and 15 Plus. With the iPhone 15 Pro now selling in India from roughly ₹60,900 to ₹1,09,900 depending on capacity and retailer (as of May to June 2026), and the public beta arriving in July 2026 ahead of a September release, this is the moment CTOs and device buyers should map their fleet against the AI tier line.

The one rule that matters: iOS 27 ≠ Apple Intelligence

The most common mistake in fleet planning this year is assuming an iOS 27 upgrade unlocks the new AI. It does not. The update runs on every iPhone that supports iOS 26, including the iPhone 11 and second-generation iPhone SE. Craig Federighi described iOS 27 as "available to more users than any iOS release ever", because for the first time in years, Apple has not dropped any iPhones from the supported list.

The AI tier is separate and stricter. According to Apple's own newsroom, Apple Intelligence and Siri AI in iOS 27 are available on iPhone 16 models or later, iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPad mini (A17 Pro), iPad models with M1 or later, Apple Watch Series 9 or later, Apple Watch Ultra 2 or later, and Apple Watch SE 3 when paired with an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone nearby.

The reason is silicon, not software. The minimum hardware requirement is the A17 Pro chip, which is why older iPhones running on the A16 Bionic chip and below are not compatible. This catches a device many buyers assume is recent enough: the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus have a different chip from the Pro models, which is why they miss out on Apple Intelligence despite running iOS 27.

This article walks through seven Apple Intelligence features in iOS 27 that draw that line, then translates the requirements into a device-buying decision.

The device tier table

Tier Devices What they get in iOS 27
iOS 27, no Apple Intelligence iPhone 11 through iPhone 14 series, iPhone SE (2nd/3rd gen), iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus OS, performance gains, parental controls — but none of the 7 AI features below
Full Apple Intelligence + baseline Siri AI iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, all iPhone 16 and iPhone 17 models All 7 features below
Advanced Siri AI (expressive voices, advanced dictation) iPhone Air, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max only The above, plus the most powerful on-device models

Source coverage confirms each row. For iOS 27 with no Apple Intelligence: iPhone 11, iPhone 12, iPhone 13, iPhone 14, iPhone SE (2nd and 3rd generation), iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus. Full Apple Intelligence and baseline Siri AI: iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and all iPhone 16 and 17 models. Advanced Siri AI features: iPhone Air, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max only. Federighi was explicit about the top tier: he said the "most powerful on-device model and the features it enables, like expressive voices and more advanced dictation," will come to Apple's most capable iPhone, iPad, and Mac systems.

The 7 Apple Intelligence features that need an iPhone 15 Pro or newer

1. Siri AI — the rebuilt assistant

This is the centrepiece of the release. During WWDC, Apple previewed software that will introduce Siri AI, an entirely new version of Siri that is profoundly more intelligent, knowledgeable, and capable. The architecture is notable: the company built it in partnership with Google, using the technology behind Google's Gemini models to power a new generation of Apple Foundation Models. The new Siri AI can search the internet, read the files on your iPhone, and comes with screen awareness, plus agentic capabilities that can take actions on your behalf. It runs only on Apple Intelligence-enabled devices, meaning the iPhone 15 Pro line and newer.

2. Spatial Reframing and Extend in Photos

Two generative photo-editing tools headline the Photos app. Spatial Reframing lets you shift the perspective of a photo after you have taken it, as if you moved the camera. You drag to adjust, and the app generates only what is needed to fill the new angle, and it works on old photos too. Alongside it, new Reframe and Extend options use AI to change a photo's composition or enlarge its crop with newly generated content. Reviewers who tested the beta found the tool distinctive: it's a uniquely Apple feature, as no equivalent tool is currently available on any other phone.

3. The agentic Passwords feature

The demo that drew the most attention was an autonomous one. "Using Apple Intelligence and Safari to agentically take action on a user's behalf, Passwords securely navigates through websites to sign in and upgrade their accounts to strong passwords." Today, current Passwords still requires users to update affected accounts themselves and does not offer a way to change multiple compromised credentials at once. For enterprise security teams this is genuinely useful, but it leans on Apple Intelligence, so it lands only on A17 Pro-class devices and newer.

4. Safari tab organisation, Notify Me, and natural-language extensions

Safari gets three AI capabilities. It uses Apple Intelligence to automatically organise open tabs, bookmarks, and the Reading List into related topics; users can generate custom browser extensions from natural-language prompts; and a "Notify Me" feature monitors a webpage and alerts the user when its content changes. The Register's assessment was measured: features such as creating Safari extensions by prompting with natural language, and Safari's Notify Me, are not revolutionary, nor poised to set the AI industry alight. Useful, incremental, and AI-gated.

5. Wallet "Create a Pass" with Visual Intelligence and bill-splitting

Wallet picks up a utility-focused AI upgrade. The Apple Wallet app adds a "Create a Pass" feature that uses Visual Intelligence to generate a digital pass for tickets, memberships, and similar items from services that do not natively support Wallet. There is also bill-splitting: with iOS 27, users can split bills using Apple Cash and Apple Intelligence by scanning a receipt with the iPhone camera, available in Messages, in Apple Wallet, or by using Visual Intelligence onscreen. Note the regional and device caveat from Apple: it is only available in the U.S. on eligible devices, requires Siri AI on an Apple Intelligence-enabled device, and Apple Intelligence is available on iPhone 16 models or later, iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPad mini (A17 Pro), and iPad models with M1 or later.

6. Contextual Messages, Mail and Calendar actions

The everyday apps gain context awareness. Messages, Mail and Calendar will be able to understand context, suggest actions and create events from simple descriptions. In Calendar specifically, the app will be able to create or modify events based on a natural-language description, identifying contacts, locations and event details as users type. In Messages, Smart Reply suggests context-aware responses based on the conversation, reading the full thread and generating replies that match the tone and subject of the chat.

7. Image Playground photorealism and Camera Siri Mode

Image Playground steps up from cartoon-style output. It can now create photorealistic images, generated images automatically include a SynthID watermark, and it is now available for creating Lock Screen wallpapers and Contact Posters directly. Visual Intelligence also moves into the Camera: the new Siri mode in the Camera app lets users get information and take action on what's in front of them. Point the iPhone at a receipt and it can surface the action to split a bill and identify the items. Both depend on Apple Intelligence hardware.

What every iPhone 11 and up gets — even without the AI

It is worth being precise so buyers do not over-spend. The performance gains in iOS 27 are not gated by the A17 Pro chip. Apple specifically called out "up to 30% faster app launches," "up to 70% faster loading of new captures in Photos," and "up to 80% faster AirDrop transfers." And the update runs on every iPhone that already runs iOS 26, so older devices get the gains too. The new parental controls also reach the wider fleet. Apple introduced a major overhaul to child safety controls including Time Allowance, which lets parents set highly customized app category restrictions and schedules.

So a fleet of iPhone 13s will feel faster on iOS 27 and gain better device management. They simply will not run the seven AI features above.

Comparison: iOS 27 AI features vs the device that unlocks them

Feature Minimum device Region notes
Siri AI (baseline) iPhone 15 Pro EU blocked on iOS at launch; unavailable in China
Spatial Reframing / Extend (Photos) iPhone 15 Pro Broadly available
Agentic Passwords iPhone 15 Pro Requires Apple Intelligence
Safari AI (tabs, Notify Me, extensions) iPhone 15 Pro Broadly available
Wallet Create a Pass / bill-split iPhone 15 Pro Bill-split US-only at launch
Image Playground photorealism iPhone 15 Pro Daily limits; iCloud+ raises quota
Expressive Siri voices / advanced dictation iPhone Air / 17 Pro Top-tier silicon only

The regional limits are material for multinationals. Mac and Apple Vision Pro users in the EU will be able to access Siri AI when set to a supported language, but Siri AI will not be available initially in the EU in iOS, iPadOS, and watchOS. Siri AI and the other new Apple Intelligence features will not be available in China while Apple works through regulatory requirements. Apple attributes the EU delay to regulation: it won't be available on iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 in the EU at launch, and Apple blamed the DMA for the delay.

India-specific considerations

For Indian buyers and fleet managers, the headline is value timing. As of March 2026, the new iPhone 15 Pro price in India starts at ₹60,900 for the 128GB Natural Titanium model, a 32% drop from its original ₹89,900 launch price, with retailers like Reliance Digital listing it at that figure. Prices vary widely by listing and capacity; one major tracker showed the iPhone 15 Pro at ₹1,09,900, with the price last changed on 22 May 2026 and the lowest price at Amazon. The point for buyers: the cheapest A17 Pro device, the iPhone 15 Pro, has fallen substantially since launch, making it the budget entry to full Apple Intelligence.

Warranty and channel discipline matter for procurement. Only Apple-authorized resellers such as Reliance Digital, Croma, and Vijay Sales provide a valid Indian warranty. Authorised channels were also running structured finance and trade-in schemes: schemes were available from 1st April till 27th June, 2026 at select participating Apple Authorised Reseller stores.

On privacy, fleet planners deploying these AI features for Indian users should account for the Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023 (DPDP). Apple's architecture is relevant here: Apple processes simple requests on the device, more complex tasks go through Private Cloud Compute servers where Apple says data is not stored or shared, and for the heaviest requests a Gemini-powered cloud model handles the work. Any organisation enabling cloud-backed AI on managed devices should still document data flows under DPDP and match consent and processing notices accordingly. If you are building internal apps that sit alongside these features, our enterprise generative AI strategy guide covers governance in more depth.

What this means for fleet buyers and CTOs

Three practical takeaways:

First, decide whether AI is in scope at all. If your use case is messaging, browsing and field productivity, an iPhone 13 fleet upgraded to iOS 27 gets the speed and management improvements without new hardware. Spend the budget elsewhere.

Second, if AI is in scope, the iPhone 15 Pro is the floor and the value pick. Every feature in this article runs on it, and Indian pricing has made it the cheapest path to full Apple Intelligence. Reserve iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone Air purchases for the small group who genuinely need expressive Siri voices and advanced dictation.

Third, plan for the developer transition if you ship apps. Apple deprecated SiriKit at WWDC 2026 with a two-to-three-year support window; apps still using SiriKit compile with warnings now and will stop working within that window, and App Intents is now the only framework through which Siri can call into a third-party app. Migrating SiriKit integrations to App Intents is the most time-sensitive item on any iOS 27 roadmap. For the broader search and discovery picture, see our ultimate guide to SEO in 2026 and how AI assistants reshape discovery in our AEO vs GEO vs SEO guide.

A reasonable timeline: pilot on the July public beta, finalise hardware decisions before the September general release, and complete any SiriKit-to-App-Intents migration within the deprecation window.

Frequently asked

Quick answers.

01 Does iOS 27 require an iPhone 15 Pro?
No. iOS 27 itself runs on every iPhone that supports iOS 26, going back to the iPhone 11 and second-generation iPhone SE. The iPhone 15 Pro requirement applies only to Apple Intelligence features such as Siri AI, generative Photos editing, and agentic Passwords. Older phones still get the OS, performance gains, and new parental controls without the AI.
02 Why doesn't the standard iPhone 15 get Apple Intelligence?
The standard iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus use the A16 Bionic chip, while the Pro models use the A17 Pro. Apple Intelligence requires the A17 Pro or newer for sufficient neural-engine performance and 8GB of RAM. This is why a 2023 non-Pro iPhone 15 misses out despite being able to install iOS 27 with no problem.
03 When does iOS 27 launch?
Apple previewed iOS 27 at WWDC on June 8, 2026, released a developer beta immediately, and confirmed a public beta in July 2026. The stable release is expected around mid-September 2026, alongside the new iPhone lineup. Apple has not confirmed an exact date, but it follows a consistent September release pattern each year.
04 Is Siri AI available everywhere at launch?
No. Siri AI launches in English first as a waitlisted beta later in 2026. It is blocked on iPhone and iPad in the EU at launch, which Apple attributes to the Digital Markets Act, and is unavailable in China pending regulatory approval. EU users can still access Siri AI on Mac and Vision Pro when set to a supported language.
05 What is the cheapest device for full Apple Intelligence?
The iPhone 15 Pro is the lowest-cost device with the required A17 Pro chip. In India, new units have dropped substantially from the ₹89,900 launch price, with listings around ₹60,900 for the 128GB model as of March 2026. Buying through Apple-authorised resellers ensures a valid Indian warranty and access to finance schemes.
06 Which features need an iPhone 17 Pro or iPhone Air specifically?
Most Apple Intelligence features run on any iPhone 15 Pro or newer. However, Craig Federighi confirmed that the most powerful on-device model, which enables expressive Siri voices and more advanced dictation, is limited to the most capable systems: namely the iPhone Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max at launch.
07 Will older iPhones get any benefit from iOS 27?
Yes, meaningfully. Apple cited up to 30% faster app launches, up to 70% faster Photos loading, and up to 80% faster AirDrop transfers, and these gains reach every supported device including the iPhone 11. The new parental controls, including Time Allowance scheduling, also apply broadly rather than only to AI-capable phones.
08 Should we buy iPhone 17 Pro models for a corporate fleet?
Only for users who need expressive Siri voices or advanced dictation. For most staff, the iPhone 15 Pro unlocks every feature covered here at a lower cost, especially given current Indian pricing. Reserve the top tier for a small group, and standardise the rest on the most affordable A17 Pro-class device that meets your support timeline.
