Summary. On 28 October 2026 Google said it is scaling ads in AI Mode to India and nine other markets, with Brazil, Mexico and the UK planned for Q4 2026; multiturn ads in follow-up questions launched in the US only. Existing Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns are eligible automatically, with text and Shopping ads under a Sponsored label, billed through the same auction as standard Search. Google lists English as the only language for these ads, although AI Mode in India also answers in Hindi and seven other Indian languages. You cannot target AI Mode on its own, opt out of it separately from Search, or write, edit, approve or opt out of the Gemini-generated AI explainers shown with some ads, and results arrive only in aggregate. Matching is the lever that matters: AI Max for Search, broad match, Shopping and Performance Max can match to the query and the AI response, while exact and phrase match serve only on clearly commercial queries. New Dynamic Search Ads creation ends in January 2027 and remaining DSA campaigns auto-upgrade from February 2027. Our verdict: restructure for AI-powered matching, fix measurement, and test before you set FY2027-28 budgets.
About this article. For Indian advertisers and agencies running Google Search, Shopping or Performance Max. Checked on 1 November 2026 against Google's blogs and Ads Help pages, Alphabet's SEC filing and StatCounter data; trade press appears only where Google has published nothing, and is attributed. Google changes ad products often, so re-check before committing budget. Not financial advice; no vendor paid for inclusion. Researched with AI assistance and reviewed by our editorial team.
What Google announced on 28 October 2026
The announcement was a short post on Google's Ads & Commerce Blog by Shashi Thakur, VP and GM for Google Search Ads and Ads on Google Experiences. It made four points:
- Markets now scaling. Australia, Canada, India, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines and Singapore. Google plans more locales in Q4 2026, naming Brazil, Mexico and the UK.
- Multiturn ads. Launching in the US only, so ads can appear in follow-up questions within an AI Mode conversation.
- Query length. AI Mode queries are on average three times longer than traditional searches, citing Google's US AI Mode report from May 2026.
- Click-through rates. Google says sponsored and organic product list items in AI Mode already have similar click-through rates, based on internal US data from 20 August to 3 September 2026: US product listings over about two weeks, not Indian lead-generation text ads.
The help page the post links to lists where ads within AI Overviews and AI Mode can serve: the US, Australia, Canada, India, Indonesia (AI Overviews only), Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan (text ads only), the Philippines and Singapore. The only language listed is English, and Google notes the list may not be exhaustive.
Alphabet reported its Q3 2026 results the same day. Google Search and other revenue grew 12% year on year to $63.35 billion, after 19% growth in Q1 and, as reported by Search Engine Journal, 17% in Q2. Chief Business Officer Philipp Schindler listed lower monetisation in AI Mode among the reasons revenue growth trailed query growth, after currency, retail and media effects, without sizing it. Sundar Pichai said query growth was the highest in five years and that Google puts the Search user experience first and monetisation second. With Google also promising more format tests, expect more AI Mode inventory through 2027.
What the post did not include: an India date for multiturn ads, ads in Indian languages, an AI Mode reporting segment, or any CPC or ad-load figure.
AI Mode has not replaced the standard results page, as we covered in Google AI Mode in 2026: not the default. This article deals only with the paid side.

How ads in AI Mode work
Eligibility and formats
Google says advertisers do not need new campaigns or separate budgets: existing Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns join the auction for AI Overviews and AI Mode when relevant. Text and Shopping ads can appear, and Google is experimenting with local inventory ads and vehicle ads. Because the placement cannot be targeted on its own, a separate AI Mode campaign only splits your data.
Matching: query versus query plus response
Direct query matching applies when the search already shows clear commercial intent, such as pool vacuum cleaners in Google's example. Contextual matching uses both the query and the AI response, for longer exploratory questions where commercial intent appears in the suggested next steps.
AI Max for Search, broad match, Shopping campaigns and Performance Max are eligible for both. Exact and phrase match keywords get direct query matching only. An account built only on exact and phrase match will miss the contextual placements that long, conversational AI Mode questions produce.
AI explainers and billing
Some placements carry AI explainers: short, independent text written by Gemini models that introduces a group of sponsored options or adds context next to an ad, drawing on the query, the AI response and public sources, including your website. Google states that advertisers cannot write, edit, approve or opt out of them; some layouts use a fixed section header instead. Your only indirect influence is keeping your site clear and current.
Billing uses the same auction and CPC or conversion-based bidding as standard Search ads, at no extra charge. Google states that buying ads does not influence organic AI answers, and that being cited organically does not affect ad eligibility.
What you can and cannot control or report on
The table combines Google's help pages on ads in AI-powered experiences, on AI Max and on text guidelines.
| Lever | Available for AI Mode ads? | Detail |
|---|---|---|
| Target AI Mode only | No | Google treats AI Overviews and AI Mode as core parts of Search |
| Opt out of AI Mode separately from Search | No | The same rule covers AI Overviews |
| Negative keywords | Yes | Existing negatives apply |
| Brand exclusions | Yes | Named by Google as a control; set at campaign level in AI Max |
| Brand inclusions | Yes, in AI Max | Campaign and ad group level |
| Asset pinning | Yes, with a caveat | Pins are not used when final URL expansion or URL inclusions pick a more relevant URL |
| Text guidelines | Yes, beta | AI Max and Performance Max; needs text customisation on; term exclusions and messaging restrictions |
| URL inclusions and exclusions | Yes, in AI Max | Inclusions at ad group level, exclusions at campaign level |
| AI explainer text | No | Cannot be written, edited, approved or switched off by advertisers |
| AI Mode performance segment | No | Included in aggregate in campaign and search terms reports |
| AI Max query visibility | Partial | AI Max match type and a source column in the search terms report |
Google's help page names negative keywords, asset pinning and brand exclusions as guardrails that still apply. AI Mode traffic sits inside your totals and search terms with no segment of its own, so any verdict on it will rest on proxies (see measurement below).

Where AI Mode ads differ from AI Overviews ads
Both use the same campaigns, auction and Sponsored label, so teams often treat them as one. Four differences matter:
- Page versus conversation. An AI Overview sits on the normal results page, so your ad can appear above it and inside it on the same search, though not inside it and directly below it. AI Mode is a separate conversational surface, and follow-up (multiturn) ads are US-only, so in India you compete mainly on the first question.
- Market lists differ. Indonesia has ads in AI Overviews but not in AI Mode. Pakistan is limited to text ads on both surfaces.
- Sensitive verticals are undocumented. Google's older AI Overviews ads page, as archived on 9 September 2026, said ads were not shown in AI Overviews for sensitive verticals such as adult, alcohol, gambling, finance, healthcare and politics. That URL now redirects to the combined page, which gives no vertical list for either surface. Indian BFSI and healthcare advertisers should not assume they serve inside AI answers.
- Reporting labels. The older page said ads in AI Overviews were reported as top ads. The combined page does not repeat that, and Google has published nothing equivalent for AI Mode.
India-specific realities
The language gap. AI Mode in India answers in English, Hindi, Bengali, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu, but Google's list for ads within AI Mode names English only, so a long question in Hindi or Tamil would not carry an in-answer ad. Pichai also said one in five AI Mode searches globally use voice, images or documents, a reason to keep product imagery strong.
Concentration risk. StatCounter puts Google at 96.69% of India's search engine market in September 2026, and above 96% in every month of 2026 so far. With no comparable search channel to shift budget to, test discipline matters more.
Brand and competitor terms. Broader matching can place your ads in conversations about competitors, and theirs in conversations about you. Set brand exclusions and inclusions deliberately, and read our analysis of the Hindware vs Google keyword-ads ruling before changing competitor-term policy.
Consent for conversion data. Google's guidance for these placements leans on Smart Bidding fed by first-party conversion data from the Google tag or offline conversion imports. Uploading CRM outcomes means processing personal data; our DPDP Act engineering playbook covers consent and purpose limitation.
India tools to test. Business Agent for Leads is in beta in India, with upGrad testing it, and a Merchant Center tool called AI Performance Insights, due in the coming months, will show product performance on AI Mode, AI Overviews and the Gemini app.
The 2027 Google Ads playbook for Indian advertisers
1. Campaign structure
- Separate brand from non-brand. Keep brand terms in exact and phrase match in their own campaign, and add brand exclusions to AI Max and Performance Max so automation does not absorb cheap brand clicks and flatter its numbers.
- Turn on AI Max through an experiment. Google says the full AI Max suite (search term matching, text customisation, final URL expansion) averages 7% more conversions or conversion value at a similar CPA or ROAS than search term matching alone, from internal 2026 data for non-retail advertisers. Its help page cites 14% more for turning AI Max on at all (2025 data, non-retail). Both are vendor figures; validate them with a 50/50 experiment. Our guide to AI Max control levers covers the settings to fix first.
- Keep exact match where it earns its place. It still serves direct commercial queries in AI Mode. If a campaign used the campaign-level broad match setting, broad keywords lose exact-style priority under AI Max; Google suggests adding exact match copies to keep it.
- Migrate DSA yourself before February 2027. New DSA creation ends in January 2027 and the auto-upgrade to AI Max starts in February 2027, so use Google's upgrade tools while you control the settings. AI Max is now the default for new Search campaigns, Google Ads Liaison Ginny Marvin said, as reported by Search Engine Land.
- Split multi-country campaigns by market, so AI Mode effects in India do not blur with markets on a different rollout.
- Check tracking templates before turning on final URL expansion. Some setups send AI Max traffic to the wrong page or a 404 error.
Common {lpurl} patterns Google lists for AI Max (Google Ads Help):
{lpurl}? {lpurl}& {lpurl}# {lpurl}
Causes of broken landing pages: a static tracking URL with no {lpurl},
or {lpurl} used inside another parameter value
2. Assets, feeds and landing pages
- Write for the situation behind the query. A long AI Mode question might read: water purifier for borewell water in a 2BHK flat under ₹20,000. Add use cases, compatibility, service areas, delivery times and price bands to assets.
- Use text guidelines to block terms and claims your compliance team cannot approve; they apply to Google-generated text and need text customisation switched on.
- Put the answer above the fold: price, specification, eligibility, next step.
- Keep the site factual and current, since AI explainers can draw on it.
- Complete the Merchant Center feed: descriptive titles and descriptions, several high-resolution product and lifestyle images, accurate prices, ratings, and shipping and return policies that match your landing pages.
3. Measurement without an AI Mode segment
- Freeze a baseline (for example 1 September to 27 October 2026) and compare like-for-like weeks, adjusting for festive-season demand.
- Bucket search terms by word count weekly; AI Mode traffic should show up first in long, question-style queries.
- Track AI Max rows: the AI Max match type and source column in the search terms report, and the Selected by column in the landing pages report. Google has also announced a unified view of search term, assets shown and landing page, with availability details promised later in 2026.
- Judge on CRM outcomes. Import qualified-lead and revenue stages as offline conversions so bidding and reports measure quality, not form fills.
Organic visibility on AI surfaces is a separate discipline, covered in our AEO vs GEO vs SEO guide.
4. Budget tests before FY2027-28
- November 2026 to January 2027: AI Max experiments, DSA migration, reporting proxies.
- February 2027: read results and set channel priorities. For Search campaigns with the Display Network turned on, the current spend allocation goes away; to keep today's setup, Google says to set the Display Network to low priority with a 50% budget allocation.
- March 2027: lock budgets on cost per qualified lead or revenue.
- Do not starve AI campaigns. Google warns that AI Max is not effective when a campaign is limited by budget. Narrow the scope rather than capping spend.
Worked example: a six-week AI Max test on a ₹12 lakh budget
These figures are hypothetical, chosen to show the arithmetic. They are not benchmarks.
A consumer-electronics brand spends ₹12,00,000 a month on Google Search and Shopping: brand campaign 15% (₹1,80,000), non-brand Search 40% (₹4,80,000) and Performance Max with Shopping 45% (₹5,40,000). Non-brand Search runs as a 50/50 experiment, so control and treatment (AI Max on) each get ₹2,40,000 a month, or ₹8,000 a day on a 30-day month. Over six weeks (42 days), each arm spends ₹8,000 × 42 = ₹3,36,000.
| Metric | Control | Treatment (AI Max) |
|---|---|---|
| Spend over 42 days | ₹3,36,000 | ₹3,36,000 |
| Conversions (form leads) | 300 | 342 |
| Cost per lead | ₹3,36,000 / 300 = ₹1,120 | ₹3,36,000 / 342 = ₹982 |
| CRM-qualified rate | 40% | 30% |
| Qualified leads | 300 × 40% = 120 | 342 × 30% = 102.6 |
| Cost per qualified lead | ₹3,36,000 / 120 = ₹2,800 | ₹3,36,000 / 102.6 = ₹3,275 |
On the platform view the treatment wins: 14% more conversions (342 / 300 = 1.14) and a 12% lower cost per lead (982 / 1,120 = 0.88). On the CRM view it loses: cost per qualified lead is about 17% higher (3,275 / 2,800 = 1.17). Review the AI Max search terms, add negatives and brand exclusions, exclude low-intent URLs, bid to qualified leads, and rerun for four weeks. Fix the decision rule in advance, for example: adopt if cost per qualified lead is within 10% of control, which here means at or below ₹2,800 × 1.10 = ₹3,080.
Implementation checklist
- List India-targeted Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns; note which already run AI Max after the September 2026 upgrades.
- Isolate brand terms; add brand exclusions to AI Max and Performance Max.
- Audit negatives for informational phrases that should never trigger paid clicks.
- Fix tracking templates, then launch 50/50 AI Max experiments on the largest non-brand campaigns.
- Migrate DSA with Google's tools before the February 2027 auto-upgrade.
- Rewrite assets around use cases and price bands; complete Merchant Center feeds.
- Set up DPDP-aligned offline conversion imports with qualified and closed stages.
- Build the weekly query-length report, reset channel priorities before February 2027, and present results by early March.
