Summary. For most fleets, buy shipping Copilot+ hardware now and treat Intel Nova Lake and AMD Medusa as 2027 pilots, not a reason to pause. On 29 October 2026 Intel said Nova Lake, its first client product on Intel 18A-P, is running ahead of schedule and that it will say more at CES (6 to 9 January 2027). AMD's November 2025 roadmap placed Medusa in 2027 and marked the roadmap as subject to change. Neither company has published core counts, NPU figures, vPro or PRO models, prices or ship dates. Hardware that clears Microsoft's Copilot+ bar (a 40+ TOPS NPU, 16 GB of RAM, 256 GB of storage) ships today. The date to plan around is 12 October 2027, when consumer Windows 10 ESU ends and servicing stops for Windows 11 25H2 Home and Pro and 24H2 Enterprise. Commercial ESU costs $61 per device for Year One and doubles each year, so a managed PC joining now pays $183 to reach October 2027. Intel expects 2027 PC units to fall about 10% while memory stays tight, so waiting is no guarantee of a lower price.
About this article. This guide is for IT and procurement teams planning PC refreshes before October 2027. Roadmap statements, specifications, prices and Microsoft dates were checked on 1 November 2026 against Intel and AMD earnings materials and investor slides, vendor releases and product briefs, Microsoft lifecycle and licensing pages and the Microsoft Store. Anything not announced is marked unconfirmed; leaks are left out. This is general information, not procurement or financial advice; vendors change prices, and no vendor paid for inclusion. Researched with AI assistance and reviewed by our editorial team.
What changed in 2026, and why 12 October 2027 is the date to plan around
Microsoft added a year to consumer Windows 10 ESU. In late June 2026 Microsoft quietly updated its documentation to extend consumer Extended Security Updates to 12 October 2027; devices already enrolled carry on automatically. Consumer ESU is not offered to devices joined to Active Directory or Microsoft Entra, devices enrolled in mobile device management, or kiosks, and Microsoft says it cannot be used in commercial scenarios. Managed fleets use commercial ESU, which costs $61 per device for Year One and doubles each year for up to three years. It is sold by the year and is cumulative: joining in Year Two means paying for Year One as well. Our guide to Microsoft's October 2026 end-of-life deadlines covers the wider ESU picture.
12 October 2027 is a triple deadline. That Patch Tuesday ends consumer ESU and ends servicing for Windows 11 25H2 Home and Pro and for Windows 11 24H2 Enterprise and Education. Closer in, Windows 11 23H2 Enterprise and Education servicing ends on 10 November 2026.
Memory costs are driving PC prices. In its third-quarter 2026 remarks, Intel said system prices have risen significantly so far this year. It expects 2026 PC units to fall about 12%, is planning for a further decline of roughly 10% in 2027, and does not expect a lasting recovery until memory supply and pricing improve. AMD told investors in August that it was planning for a softer second half because higher memory and component costs were weighing on demand.
A full generation of Copilot+ business silicon is on sale: Intel Core Ultra Series 3 (Panther Lake) with vPro, AMD Ryzen AI PRO 400 laptops and desktops, and Qualcomm Snapdragon X2 Elite.
What Intel has officially said about Nova Lake
From Intel's 29 October 2026 prepared remarks, the earnings call and Intel Foundry's process page:
- Status. Chief executive Lip-Bu Tan said Nova Lake, Intel's first Intel 18A-P client product, is ahead of schedule, that design wins should reach about twice Panther Lake's at launch, and that Intel will share more at CES in January.
- Timing. Chief financial officer Dave Zinsner said Intel enters 2027 with Nova Lake as its client offering and that it covers what Intel needs to compete across the client market. He gave no ship date.
- Positioning. Zinsner said Nova Lake fills a gap Intel has had in high-end desktop.
- Process. Intel says 18A-P is on track to launch by the end of 2026. Intel Foundry quotes more than 9% higher performance at the same power, or more than 18% lower power at the same performance, versus Intel 18A. These are process figures, not Nova Lake product claims.
Unconfirmed: laptop versus desktop launch order, NPU TOPS, core counts, cache, graphics, vPro availability, socket, and whether every tile uses 18A-P. Leaked core counts and model names circulate; we do not repeat them.
What AMD has officially said about Medusa (Zen 6)
- Roadmap placement. At its 11 November 2025 Financial Analyst Day, Jack Huynh showed an AI compute roadmap with the Gorgon family over 2026 and Medusa over 2027, and the slide states that the roadmap is subject to change. PCWorld and Notebookcheck read it as Gorgon Point for 2026 and Medusa Point, the Zen 6 laptop family, for 2027; Notebookcheck describes the timelines as tentative.
- Architecture. AMD says its sixth-generation EPYC Venice server family, in production since mid-2026, is built on the Zen 6 core and 2nm technology. AMD has not said which node the Medusa laptop chips use. Our EPYC Venice server refresh guide covers the data centre side.
- NPU. AMD's NPU roadmap slide promised better scale and power efficiency for the next generation, without TOPS figures.
- Track record. The 2026 half played out: Zen 5 Ryzen AI 400 laptops, the parts Notebookcheck calls Gorgon, reached OEMs from the first quarter of 2026.
Unconfirmed: launch quarter, core counts, NPU TOPS, graphics, Ryzen PRO variants and the Medusa Halo part that Notebookcheck expects. Benchmark-database sightings are leaks. AMD's next scheduled update is its third-quarter 2026 results on 3 November 2026, after the US market close.

What you can buy today
Intel Core Ultra Series 3 (Panther Lake) with vPro
Intel launched Core Ultra Series 3 on 5 January 2026 as its first client platform on Intel 18A, with up to 16 CPU cores, 12 Xe graphics cores and 50 NPU TOPS on the top models, more than 200 designs, and systems on sale from 27 January. The vPro versions became available from 31 March 2026 in more than 125 designs. IT teams can switch on vPro management from the Intune admin centre, and the platform adds Intel Total Storage Encryption for BitLocker. Intel claims over 30% faster CPU performance and up to 4x AI performance against a four-year-old business PC, its own test. One supply note: Zinsner said Intel is moving some Oregon 18A wafer capacity, which would generally have built Panther Lake, to Intel 3 server production.
AMD Ryzen AI 400 and Ryzen AI PRO 400
AMD's CES 2026 announcement introduced Zen 5 Ryzen AI 400 and PRO 400 laptop chips with XDNA 2 NPUs of up to 60 TOPS, and AMD says every model exceeds the Copilot+ requirements. The HX PRO 475 is rated at 60 TOPS, the HX PRO 470 at 55 and the other PRO models at 50, with up to 12 cores; systems were due from the first quarter of 2026. AM5 desktop versions, including PRO models with up to 50 TOPS, were due from the second quarter. AMD reported Ryzen PRO sales up more than 50% year on year in the second quarter of 2026. For AI developers, Ryzen AI Max PRO 400 supports up to 192 GB of unified memory; in July AMD said OEM systems would follow later in 2026.
Qualcomm Snapdragon X2 Elite
The X2 Elite product brief lists 3nm chips with up to 18 Oryon cores and Hexagon NPUs rated at 80 or 85 TOPS (INT8), plus Snapdragon Guardian out-of-band management and Microsoft Pluton support. X2 laptops reached US retail in April 2026; TechSpot cited a Best Buy listing for the ASUS Zenbook A16 with X2 Elite Extreme from $1,699.99. These are Arm64 machines, so test every business app, VPN client, security agent and driver.
Apple M6 (context for mixed fleets)
Apple announced the 14-inch MacBook Pro with M6 on 27 October 2026: a 12-core CPU, Neural Accelerators in the GPU and a Dual 16-core Neural Engine, from $1,999 in the US, with availability from 6 November. Copilot+ is a Windows programme, so the label does not apply; M6 matters mainly to macOS teams.

Copilot+ PC requirements: the 40 TOPS and 16 GB rule
Microsoft's Windows 11 specifications page sets three Copilot+ floors on top of the normal Windows 11 requirements: an NPU capable of 40+ TOPS, 16 GB of DDR5 or LPDDR5 memory, and 256 GB of SSD or UFS storage. Its processor list names AMD Ryzen AI 300 and 400, Intel Core Ultra 200V and 300V, and Snapdragon X series. Because the Intel entry names the V series, confirm each Core Ultra Series 3 model with the OEM before treating it as Copilot+.
Microsoft says a PC with a 40+ TOPS NPU but less than 16 GB of RAM is not a Copilot+ PC and misses features such as improved Windows search and Click to Do. Trimming RAM to offset memory prices removes the features the NPU was bought for, and availability varies by region, so check your markets.
Windows dates fleet buyers must plan around
Dates come from Microsoft's lifecycle and ESU pages, AMD's results notice and CTA.
| Date | What happens | Who it affects |
|---|---|---|
| 3 Nov 2026 | AMD Q3 2026 results | AMD evaluators |
| 10 Nov 2026 | Windows 11 23H2 Enterprise and Education servicing ends | Enterprise fleets still on 23H2 |
| 6 to 9 Jan 2027 | CES 2027; Intel to share more on Nova Lake | Anyone waiting on 2027 chips |
| 12 Oct 2027 | Consumer Windows 10 ESU ends | Unmanaged and small-office PCs |
| 12 Oct 2027 | Windows 11 25H2 Home and Pro, 24H2 Enterprise and Education servicing ends | Windows 11 fleets on those versions |
| October 2028 | Commercial ESU three-year maximum | Managed Windows 10 holdouts |
Eligible Windows 11 devices only need a feature update; version 26H2 has been available since 29 September 2026. The hardware decision concerns Windows 10 machines that cannot run Windows 11 and Windows 11 machines at the end of a refresh cycle, which Intel puts at four years on average.
Buy now vs wait: decision table
The ESU figure comes from Microsoft's commercial pricing; the memory outlook is Intel's.
| Your situation | Recommendation | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Managed Windows 10 PCs that fail Windows 11 checks, no ESU yet | Buy now | Bridging to Oct 2027 costs $183 per device and buys no hardware |
| Windows 10 PCs already covered by commercial ESU | Pilot, then decide | Covered into October 2027 if Year Two is bought; judge 2027 business models when published |
| Windows 11 PCs under three years old | Wait | Move to 26H2 before 12 Oct 2027 |
| High-end desktops, purchase can slip two quarters | Wait for CES 2027 details | Intel aims Nova Lake at its high-end desktop gap; specs unconfirmed |
| AI developers running local models | Buy now | Ryzen AI Max PRO 400 or MacBook Pro M6; Medusa Halo is unconfirmed |
| Standardised on vPro or AMD PRO management | Buy current generation | No vPro or PRO versions of the 2027 chips announced |
| Arm-ready apps, battery life and 5G matter | Buy Snapdragon X2 | 80 to 85 NPU TOPS and Guardian management today |
| Large, budget-constrained frontline fleet | Buy in phases now | Intel expects the PC market to stay weak until memory improves |
A middle path for larger fleets: replace urgent Windows 10 machines on current hardware in the fourth quarter of 2026 and the first quarter of 2027, and hold back 5 to 10% of the 2027 budget for a Nova Lake or Medusa pilot once business models and prices are public. Our CES 2027 enterprise briefing lists the questions to put to vendors at the show.
Worked cost example: 400-device fleet
Assume 120 of 400 PCs run Windows 10, fail Windows 11 checks, are Intune-managed (so consumer ESU is unavailable) and skipped ESU Year One. As a hardware reference we use the lowest Copilot+ PC price on Microsoft's Premium Performance PC store page on 1 November 2026: $854.99 for a Dell Plus 2-in-1 14-inch consumer model. Business vPro or AMD PRO models are priced separately, so substitute your OEM quote. ESU prices follow Microsoft's $61 Year One rate, doubling each year.
| Option | Per device | 120 devices | What you get |
|---|---|---|---|
| A. Commercial ESU into Oct 2027 (Years One and Two) | $61 + $122 = $183 | $21,960 | Patches only; hardware still to buy |
| B. Commercial ESU to Oct 2028 (three years) | $61 + $122 + $244 = $427 | $51,240 | Patches for one more year |
| C. Replace now at the reference price | $854.99 | $102,598.80 | New Copilot+ hardware, no ESU |
- Option A is about 21% of the reference device price ($183 / $854.99) for one more year of patches; Option B is about 50% ($427 / $854.99).
- If the PCs already had Year One, Year Two alone is $122 per device ($14,640 for 120), roughly $10.17 per device per month, but ESU is sold only by the year.
- Waiting for a Nova Lake or Medusa business laptop means paying Option A now plus the device later. That pays off only if the 2027 chip adds more than $183 of value per device and prices do not climb further.
- Windows 365 is a third route: Windows 10 endpoints connecting to Windows 365 Cloud PCs are entitled to ESU for up to three years with an active subscription. Check current Windows 365 pricing before modelling it.
India, UK, EU and US notes
India. Consumer ESU costs $30 or the local-currency equivalent plus tax, and commercial ESU comes through Microsoft volume licensing. Microsoft says improved Windows search on Copilot+ PCs is optimised for English, Simplified Chinese, French, German, Japanese and Spanish, so Indian-language users may see less benefit from it. On-device inference keeps more personal data on the endpoint, which helps DPDP Act workflow design but does not create compliance; our DPDP engineering playbook covers the controls.
EU and EEA. Microsoft says consumer ESU enrolment options and timing may vary in the European Economic Area, so check the local-language page. Commercial terms are the same.
UK and US. Check Microsoft's localised ESU page for regional details. Intel says Core Ultra Series 3 is built on Intel 18A, designed and manufactured in the United States, which matters to buyers with domestic-sourcing rules.
Refresh checklist for November 2026 to October 2027
- Inventory by risk. Windows version, Windows 11 eligibility and join state (AD, Entra joined, Entra registered, MDM) for every device.
- Close servicing gaps. Move 23H2 Enterprise devices by 10 November 2026, and 24H2 Enterprise and 25H2 Home and Pro devices to 26H2 before 12 October 2027.
- Decide ESU per device. It is cumulative and sold by the year.
- Set a spec floor. 40+ TOPS NPU, 16 GB RAM (more for developers), 256 GB storage, Pluton or TPM 2.0, and vPro, AMD PRO or Guardian for out-of-band management.
- Test Arm64 first if Snapdragon is on the list, including security agents, VPN and printing.
- Lock allocation and price on current-generation models while memory is tight.
- Watch three dates. AMD's results on 3 November 2026, CES from 6 January 2027, and the first Nova Lake and Medusa business model announcements.
- Pilot before standardising. Run 60 to 90 days on your real image and agents.
